It was a perfect storm. I’ve been craving penne alla vodka like crazy and was having a lazy Sunday, so I decided to try out Amazon Prime Whole Foods delivery and get some vodka sauce delivered. The future is here, folks!
I’ll write more about the Amazon Prime Whole Foods delivery experience in another post, but it was surprisingly easy and enjoyable. I had everything I ordered in just under two hours, including the star of this post, Whole Foods’ Vodka Sauce.
This sauce, as you can see in the above picture, is the kind that comes refrigerated from their prepared foods section.
The ingredients list is simple, the way I like my pasta sauce to be. There’s crushed tomatoes, cream, vodka, EVOO, garlic, salt, and pepper.
I heated the sauce up on the stove-top on medium until it started to simmer, then simmered until my penne was done cooking. All you have to do is toss the sauce with the pasta and boom, dinner is served.
Whole Foods’ vodka sauce tasted a little less creamier than I expected, but tossing some grated romano on top of my pasta helped with that. It tasted enough like fresh vodka sauce that my craving was satisfied, but to be honest, it didn’t replace the real thing from a restaurant.
I’ll definitely continue to buy this vodka sauce when a penne alla vodka craving hits, because the ease and convenience can’t be beat. All in all though, Whole Food’s sauce did leave me feeling like if I want really amazing penne alla vodka at home, it might be time to try and make homemade sauce.
