Junior year of college, I moved into an apartment in Mission Hill with a few of my friends, and proceeded to have one of the best years of my life. I ended up moving the next fall, but a bunch of my friends stayed longer, so it just kind of ended up being our college neighborhood. Mission Hill is a little rough around the edges, sure, but it was the backdrop for a lot of “coming of age” experiences. It’s also home to my favorite pizza place in Boston, the hugely underrated Penguin Pizza.
Penguin Pizza is a chill place. The same people have been working there for years, they’ve got a million different beers (and mug club), and the pizza is just so good. That being said, the atmosphere of the restaurant definitely adds to the pizza experience- this is the kind of place that you always eat in at because it’s such a perfect place to hang out and catch up with someone.
Now, for the pizza itself- Their crust is thin, semi floppy, can be a little burnt around the edges, and has a glorious sprinkling of corn starch on the bottom. The sauce is kind of tangy I guess? The pepperoni on the pizza are nothing special by themselves. HOWEVER, the cheese blend that they use is out of this world. I don’t know what’s in it but it’s kind of sharp, and just so damn tasty. Throw some parmesan and crushed red pepper on a slice, let the cheese congeal a little bit, and you’ve got heaven in your mouth. Everything just comes together perfectly.
Bonus: the wings are good too!
