Hi friends! It’s been a long year but as the temperatures drop, I’ve dusted off my Baking Steel and am getting back in the habit of making pizzas at home. I was gifted a can of Mutti Pizza Sauce with Basil & Oregano by my mother-in-law a few months ago, and finally got around to giving it a try.
Mutti Pizza Sauce with Basil & Oregano comes in a 14 oz can, and has a pretty short ingredient list – tomatoes, Mediterranean sea salt, basil, oregano, onion, and “natural flavor”. One can has enough sauce for 4 pizzas, so use it for pizza night, or plan on setting aside and using the remainder shortly after.
I spread it on my pizzas straight out of the can, and baked my Hot Italian Sausage & Ricotta Pizza & a Pepperoni pizza as usual. Mutti Pizza Sauce with Basil & Oregano had a nice balanced taste, as good as any homemade sauce that I’ve ever made.
The sauce texture was smooth, which I usually prefer, and wasn’t too salty or too sweet. I could taste the oregano a lot more than I could taste the basil, which was fine by me. I wasn’t expecting a super traditional Neapolitan sauce, but I can see how if you were, you might be a little disappointed. Crushed san marzano tomatoes, sea salt, olive oil, and fresh basil, this is not.
That being said, taking into account ease of use as well as the taste, I thought that Mutti Pizza Sauce with Basil & Oregano was great. I would definitely order more to keep on hand. I appreciate the portion size of the Mutti cans, since usually canned tomatoes come in larger quantities that are more than I need.
