Johnny’s Pizza & Subs in Dorchester, across from the Ashmont T stop, is certainly catering to people who want fast, cheap pizza. The interior is no frills – you order at a counter and there are a few tables to the side for if you’re not getting your food to go. Definitely don’t bring a date for dinner here. They don’t offer delivery, but you can call ahead for take-out. They’re also cash only and have an ATM inside. I’ve come to Johnny’s because it’s within walking distance of my apartment, and every once in a while I just want a quick bite and don’t want to pay and wait for delivery.
People on Yelp love this place, but I’ve always been less than impressed with the pizza. It’s not terrible, but it’s not good either. There are a lot of better options in the neighborhood. The sauce was sweet and tasted pretty meh. The cheese was gooey and congealed and reminded me of what you’d get at a sports venue. This is admittedly common practice, but the pepperonis on the slices seemed to be thrown on after the pizza was cooked. The crust is a thin NY style and was pretty tasteless except for the cornmeal on the bottom. The upside is that a slice is 1/4 of the pizza and will only run you $3 including tax, the service was fast, and the location is extremely convenient.
